From all the money this movie made, I’m pretty sure I’m one of the last people to see it.
Nonetheless, Jumanji surrounds four high school students who all get detention and discover an old video game. But find themselves out of their element, when they are sucked into the game and become their respective avatars. Now they must save “Jumanji” in order to get back to the real world.
Let me start out by saying Jack Black playing a 16 year old girl is by far the funniest and most creative thing I’ve seen from him in a long time. He was by far my favorite part of the film. But all the main characters do great jobs and I like the twist that they all have. The Rock plays a gamer nerd, Karen Gillian plays an awkward teenage girl, and Kevin Hart is supposed to be the jock. And while Kevin Hart is funny throughout the film, I feel like he’s just being himself and not playing the teenager that he’s supposed to be.
The movie itself is just fun, you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the dynamic that these four characters have together. Nick Jonas is also in the film, but he’s part is not really important and doesn’t add much. Bobby Cannavale plays the villian in the film, but he’s over the top and is pretty useless as well. Like I said before, the main draw is the chemistry between The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillian – and they all work really well together.
I give Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle a B+
